In one of the greatest Cup shockers ever, Tottenham Hotspur of Division 1 have been knocked out of the FA Cup by Conference league team, Burnley, in the quarter-finals.
The tie, hosted at Spurs home ground was seen my many as an easy route into the semi-finals for the London club. Burnley, in their first season in the Chickster league have struggled in the Conference and almost got relegated. Their Cup run so far has been miraculous to say the least, and when they drew Spurs away, no-one gave them a chance.
Spurs thought they had been given the plum tie of the quarter-finals, with Burnley being the lowest ranking team remaining. The match was closely fought, with not much between the sides. Spurs had the majority of possession but could not find a break in their opponents half to get a shot on target, as Burnley defended for their lives. Every time Spurs came forward, Burnley had 8 or 9 players behind the ball, blocking Spurs way.
Late in the second half, Burnley got a breakaway as Spurs had pushed forward seeking a winner. Although Spurs had a few defenders back, they could not block the shot and it whizzed past the keeper to stun the home fans. With only minutes of the game remaining, Spurs pushed forward knowing they only had one chance left. They earned a corner, but Burnley crowded them out and managed to boot the ball clear. Spurs tried one last time to get a high ball into the goal area but Burnley collected it and cleared it once again. The final whistle rang out and Burnley have made it into the semi-finals.
Incredible scenes as the Burnley fans celebrate their teams biggest ever victory.
